Welcome, beloved members of ICA Macau! Today, we’re diving deep into a topic that’s at the very heart of our faith: worshiping God. Before we begin, take a moment to watch the sermon video below for a fuller understanding of this crucial subject.
Now, let’s explore together the profound implications of worship in our lives as believers.
We Are Made to Worship
Have you ever stopped to consider that you were created with a purpose? That purpose, dear friends, is worship. It’s not just something we do; it’s who we are at our very core. But here’s the thing: we’re always worshiping something or someone. The question isn’t whether we worship, but who or what we worship.
Think about it. What captures your attention, your time, your resources? What do you value most? These are telltale signs of what you’re truly worshiping. And if it’s not God, we’ve got a problem.
“You have made us for yourself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” – St. Augustine
The Danger of Misplaced Worship
Remember the story of the Israelites and the golden calf? It’s a stark reminder of how easily we can fall into idolatry. We might not be crafting golden statues, but we’re just as susceptible to worshiping things other than God – career, relationships, possessions, or even ourselves.
But what if I told you that true fulfillment comes only when we worship the One we were designed to worship? That’s right – everything else will leave us feeling empty and unsatisfied.
How We Worship Matters
Now that we understand we’re made to worship, let’s talk about how we should worship. Jesus gives us a profound insight in His conversation with the Samaritan woman:
“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” – John 4:24
But what does this mean for us today?
Worship in Spirit
Worshiping in spirit means engaging our hearts, not just going through the motions. It’s not about a specific place or time – it’s about a heart posture. Are you truly present when you worship? Or are you just mouthing words while your mind wanders?
Worship in Truth
Worshiping in truth means basing our worship on who God really is, not who we imagine Him to be. It requires knowing God through His Word and aligning our thoughts about Him with the truth He’s revealed.
Here’s a challenge for you: Next time you’re in worship, whether it’s during our Sunday service or in your personal devotion time, consciously engage both your heart and your mind. Feel the emotions, yes, but also think about the truths you’re proclaiming about God.
Worship in Life and Death
Now, here’s where it gets really exciting. Worship isn’t just for Sunday mornings or when we’re feeling particularly spiritual. It’s a lifestyle that encompasses every aspect of our lives – and it doesn’t end when we die!
“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” – 1 Corinthians 10:31
Imagine living each moment as an act of worship. Your work becomes an offering to God. Your relationships reflect His love. Your choices honor Him. This is the kind of all-encompassing worship God desires from us.
The Eternal Worship Service
But wait, there’s more! (Didn’t I promise some open loops?) Our worship doesn’t end with our earthly lives. In fact, it’s just the beginning. In heaven, we’ll join with angels and saints in perfect, unending worship of our King.
Every time we gather for corporate worship, we’re getting a taste of this eternal reality. We’re joining our voices with the heavenly chorus, praising the One who sits on the throne. Isn’t that an awe-inspiring thought?
Renewing Our Minds for True Worship
Now, I know what some of you might be thinking. “Pastor, this all sounds great, but I struggle to maintain this kind of worship in my daily life.” I hear you. The world constantly pulls us away from God-centered worship. That’s why the Apostle Paul urges us:
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” – Romans 12:2
Renewing our minds is key to maintaining a lifestyle of worship. Here are some practical steps:
- Acknowledge God daily: Start your day by recognizing His presence and sovereignty.
- Set your mind on spiritual things: Fill your thoughts with Scripture, not worldly concerns.
- Practice gratitude: Regularly thank God for His blessings, big and small.
- Serve others: Use your gifts to bless others as an act of worship.
The Challenge: 7 Days of Intentional Worship
Here’s my challenge to you, dear church family: For the next 7 days, commit to intentional worship in every area of your life. Start each day by offering yourself as a living sacrifice to God. Throughout the day, consciously do everything “in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him” (Colossians 3:17).
At the end of the week, reflect on how this intentional focus on worship has impacted your relationship with God and others. I believe you’ll experience a profound shift in your perspective and a deeper connection with our Creator.
Conclusion: Our Highest Calling
Beloved, worshiping God is not just our responsibility; it’s our highest privilege and deepest joy. It’s what we were created for, and it’s what will satisfy the longings of our hearts. As we learn to worship in spirit and truth, in life and in death, we’ll find ourselves drawn closer to the heart of God.
Remember, every moment is an opportunity for worship. Every breath can be a prayer. Every action can bring glory to our King. So let’s embrace this calling with all our hearts, minds, souls, and strength. Let’s be a church known for our passionate, authentic, and unceasing worship of the One who is truly worthy.
May our lives echo the words of the psalmist:
“I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth.” – Psalm 34:1
Let’s worship God together, now and forevermore. Amen.
