Who is Jesus? Understanding His Identity Through Scripture and Testimony

This blog post is a companion to Pastor’s Sunday sermon. We encourage you to watch the video below before continuing.

The Most Important Question You’ll Ever Answer

If I asked you right now, “Who are you?” you might show me your ID card or introduce me to your family. But what if I asked you, “Who is Jesus?” Your answer to this question will determine not just your present life, but your eternal destiny.

“I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” – John 14:6

Jesus in His Own Words

Let’s explore three profound statements Jesus made about Himself:

1. The Light of the World

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life” (John 8:12). In a world filled with darkness and confusion, Jesus offers clarity and purpose.

2. The Bread of Life

“I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry” (John 6:35). Just as our bodies need physical food, our souls hunger for spiritual nourishment that only Jesus can provide.

3. The Way, Truth, and Life

Perhaps His most powerful declaration: “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). This isn’t just a suggestion – it’s an absolute statement about salvation.

Divine Confirmation: The Angel’s Testimony

Even before Jesus’s birth, an angel declared His identity to Mary: “You shall call His name Jesus (Yeshua), for He will save His people from their sins.” The very name “Jesus” comes from the Hebrew “Yeshua,” meaning “God is salvation.” His identity and mission were embedded in His very name!

From Family to Followers: A Transformation Story

One of the most compelling evidences of Jesus’s divine nature comes from His own family’s transformation. Consider these fascinating details:

  • His brothers initially didn’t believe in Him
  • After His resurrection, they became devoted followers
  • James, His brother, went from skeptic to church leader
  • Mary, His mother, joined the early church in prayer and worship

The Ultimate Question: Peter’s Recognition

When Jesus asked His disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” Peter’s response changed everything:

“You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” – Matthew 16:16

Jesus’s response reveals a crucial truth: This knowledge doesn’t come from human wisdom but divine revelation. “Blessed are you, Simon… for this was not revealed to you by flesh and blood, but by my Father in heaven.”

Your Personal Challenge

Here’s your challenge this week: When someone asks about your faith, don’t shy away. Share who Jesus is to you personally. You don’t need to know every theological argument or have all the answers. What matters is your personal testimony of who Jesus is in your life.

Three Simple Steps to Start:

  1. Write down your personal answer to “Who is Jesus to me?”
  2. Share this answer with at least one person this week
  3. Pray for God to send people your way who are seeking answers about Jesus

A Final Thought

Your eternal status depends on your relationship with Jesus. He isn’t just a historical figure, a great teacher, or a moral example. He is either your Lord and Savior, or He isn’t. There’s no middle ground.

“For there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.” – Acts 4:12

Remember, you don’t need to have all the answers, but you do need to know Him personally. That’s the difference between religion and relationship.

Prayer for Revelation

Father, we pray for everyone reading this article. Like Peter, we ask for divine revelation of who Jesus truly is. Open our hearts to understand and our mouths to declare that Jesus is Lord. Give us boldness to share this truth with others. In Jesus’s name, Amen.
