Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, today we’re diving deep into a topic that affects every single one of us – the reality of sin and God’s incredible path to forgiveness. As we conclude our November series on “The Problem of Sin,” I want to share some profound truths that complement our video message above.
The Deception We Face About Sin
In our modern world, we’ve become increasingly comfortable with sin. Perhaps the greatest deception we face isn’t that sin doesn’t exist, but that it doesn’t matter as much as God says it does. This dangerous mindset leads us down three paths:
The Modern Redefinition of Sin
Have you noticed how our culture has masterfully rebranded sin? We’ve created softer words that make us feel better about our transgressions:
- We’re not lazy – we’re “unmotivated”
- We’re not gossiping – we’re “sharing concerns”
- We’re not being prideful – we’re “practicing self-care”
“If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.” – 1 John 1:8
The Divine Perspective on Sin
Here’s a truth that might shake you: Every sin, no matter how small we think it is, is ultimately an offense against God Himself. Remember King David’s words after his grave sins against Bathsheba and Uriah?
“Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight.” – Psalm 51:4
The Good News About God’s Response to Sin
But here’s where the story takes a beautiful turn. While God hates sin with perfect hatred, He loves us with perfect love. This creates what seems like an impossible situation – until we look at the cross.
When we confess our sins, three amazing things happen:
- We receive an advocate – Jesus Christ stands as our defense attorney
- We experience true forgiveness – not just covering up, but complete cleansing
- We are restored to fellowship with God – our relationship is renewed
The Power of True Confession
True confession isn’t just saying “sorry” while planning to repeat the same sin. Real confession means agreeing with God about what sin really is. When we confess, we’re not informing God of something He doesn’t know – we’re aligning our hearts with His truth.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” – 1 John 1:9
God’s Response to Genuine Confession
Here’s something remarkable: There’s no such thing as delayed forgiveness with God – only delayed confession on our part. The moment we truly confess, God’s forgiveness is instant and complete. Why? Because:
- He is faithful to His promises
- He is just because Jesus paid our penalty
- He is loving and desires restoration
Your Challenge This Week
I want to challenge each of you to take these three specific steps this week:
- Examine Your Heart: Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any sin you’ve been minimizing or redefining
- Confess Specifically: Don’t just offer general confessions, but name your sins specifically before God
- Accept His Forgiveness: Don’t carry what God has already removed
Remember this powerful truth: The same God who is holy enough to hate your sin is loving enough to forgive it completely.
A Prayer for Confession
Let’s close with this prayer:
Father, we come before You acknowledging that we have sinned. We’ve often minimized our sins or tried to redefine them. Thank You that through Jesus, we can find complete forgiveness. Help us to confess our sins quickly and fully, trusting in Your faithful promise to forgive. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
