As believers in God’s kingdom, we are called to seek justice. But what does that really mean? How can we pursue true justice in a world full of injustice? Let’s explore this critical topic together.
The Foundation of True Justice
Before we dive in, let’s remember that true justice is rooted in God’s character. As image-bearers of our Creator, we have a responsibility to reflect His justice in our world.
“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” – Micah 6:8
This verse captures the essence of our calling. But how do we put it into practice?
Three Keys to Seeking True Justice
1. Ask for Wisdom
Remember King Solomon? When faced with a difficult judgment, he didn’t rely on his own understanding. Instead, he asked God for wisdom. We must do the same.
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” – James 1:5
Seeking justice isn’t about following our gut feelings or popular opinion. It’s about aligning our hearts with God’s wisdom. Are you regularly asking God for wisdom in your daily life?
2. Breathe in Scripture
True justice is always informed by God’s Word. Without the solid foundation of Scripture, our efforts to seek justice can easily go astray.
“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” – 2 Timothy 3:16-17
When we immerse ourselves in God’s Word, we gain His perspective on justice. We learn to see people as He sees them – as valuable image-bearers deserving of dignity and respect.
3. Come Together as One
Seeking justice is not a solo mission. We’re called to work together as the body of Christ. Remember Elijah? He thought he was alone in his fight for justice, but God revealed 7,000 others who stood with him.
“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.” – Hebrews 10:24-25
When we unite in pursuit of justice, we reflect the unity of our triune God and demonstrate the power of His kingdom to a watching world.
The Two Spheres of Justice
Now, you might be thinking, “This all sounds great, but how does it apply to my everyday life?” Let’s break it down into two spheres:
The Ordained Sphere
This sphere includes God-ordained institutions and authorities such as parents, church leaders, teachers, and government officials. If you’re in one of these roles, you have a special responsibility to administer justice fairly.
The Commanded Sphere
This is where every believer can and should seek justice. It’s about living in right relationships with God and others, treating everyone with the dignity they deserve as image-bearers of God. This happens in our families, workplaces, friendships, and communities.
Which sphere do you find yourself in most often? How can you seek justice more intentionally in your daily interactions?
The Challenge: Overcoming Evil with Good
As we close, let’s consider the powerful words of Romans 12:21:
“Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
This is the essence of seeking true justice. It’s not about vengeance or retaliation. It’s about actively pursuing what is good, right, and just in God’s eyes.
So here’s my challenge to you: This week, look for one opportunity each day to seek justice in your sphere of influence. It might be standing up for someone who’s being mistreated, volunteering to help those in need, or simply treating others with the dignity they deserve as God’s image-bearers.
Remember, every act of justice, no matter how small, reflects God’s character and advances His kingdom. As you seek justice, you’re participating in God’s work of restoration and redemption in our broken world.
Are you ready to take up this kingdom responsibility? Let’s seek true justice together, for God’s glory and the good of our neighbors. The world is waiting for the justice that only God’s people can bring.
